PERINBABA

Giulietta Masina stars as a kindly winter fairy who rescues a fearless boy from Death and takes him into her enchanted mountain home. But even a life beyond Death’s reach cannot keep young Jakub from longing for the world below, where love awaits him. Drawing on the Brothers Grimm, Slovak visionary Juraj Jakubisko fills his film with mischievous humor and extravagant handmade magic, preserving the cruelty that gives fairy tales their power alongside their promise of happiness. A vortex of visual sumptuousness and practical effects ingenuity, PERINBABA is a Christmas TV staple in Slovakia, even with its many avant-garde qualities. Who doesn’t want to see Masina bouncing on a feather bed, sending snow tumbling down upon the earth?

“'PERINBABA is one of the most singular, exquisitely shot, visually sumptuous fantasy films ever produced. The set pieces are truly lavish & sparkle with an ethereal quality that is uniquely Slovak, and uniquely Jakubisko.” - Ján Varga
