Seattle Against War Fundraiser
A hallucinatory biopic that breaks all cinematic conventions, WALKER tells the story of nineteenth-century American adventurer—and apostle of Manifest Destiny—William Walker (Ed Harris), who abandoned a series of sordid careers to become a soldier of fortune and, for many months, the dictator of Nicaragua where he re-legalized slavery.
Made with mad abandon and political acuity—and the support of the Sandinista army and government during the contra war—the film uses this true tale as a satirical attack on American imperialism and a freewheeling condemnation of the narcissistic, nihilistic self-destruction at the heart of all American ideology. Brutal, trenchant, and unsettlingly surreal, it’s frankly hard to believe that Alex Cox, director of REPO MAN, was able to get this movie produced in the 1980s by a major motion picture studio.
Celebrate Seattle Against War (SAW)’s second anniversary and International Human Rights Day with a film screening fundraiser. Your ticket will support our work to fight the U.S. war machine and build an anti-imperialist movement in Seattle. Funds raised will go towards inventory and transportation expenses for actions, with a portion of the funds going to the Sameer Project, an organization providing critical aid for Palestinian families surviving the genocide in Gaza.
In honor of International Human Rights Day and the sharpening contradictions between imperialism and oppressed nations of the world, we chose Walker (1987), a film that explores U.S. crimes in the 19th century in Nicaragua and connects it to present imperialist interventions.
About Seattle Against War
Seattle Against War (SAW) is a grassroots anti-war, anti-imperialist organization based in South Seattle. We are a chapter of the Anti-War Action Network (AWAN), a network of anti-war organizations around the United States committed to building a broad movement opposed to the greatest cause of injustice in the world today: the U.S. and its senseless destructive wars, sanctions, and interventions.
In Seattle, SAW confront corporations and politicians that profit from war, imperialism, and genocide, and build bridges between the many anti-war activists in our city. Over the last two years, we have been relentless in pressuring Representative Adam Smith (WA-09), who is a senior ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee and who can and should do more to end the senseless violence perpetuated by the U.S. all around the world. More recently, we’ve launched a new campaign to kick military recruiters out of high schools to protect future generations from being a pawn for the U.S. imperialist war machine.
